First, check your arrival point

Check the exact arrival point for your chosen service. A car park, hotel and railway station are different destinations: do not assume a booking includes the onward journey to the airport terminal.

The only London airport that charges you by the minute

This is the single most important thing to know about Luton, and most people find out the expensive way.

The drop-off zone by the terminal has a short included window. After that, the meter runs per minute, up to a maximum stay. No other London airport does this. A long goodbye at Luton costs real money, and the charge applies at every hour of every day.

The zone is barrierless. Cameras read your plate and you pay online by midnight the following day. Miss that and it becomes a penalty charge, which is reduced if you pay it quickly but is still far more than the original fee.

The free alternative, and it's the most generous in London

The Long Stay car park (postcode LU2 9NW) is free for up to two hours, with a shuttle running 24 hours a day, roughly every twenty minutes and taking about ten minutes each way.

Two hours is more than any other London airport gives you. If you're collecting someone from a delayed flight, this is the answer — you can wait comfortably instead of watching a meter.

The DART, and the trick nobody mentions

Luton Airport Parkway station connects to the terminal by the DART, an automated people-mover that takes under four minutes. It costs a few pounds per person each way on top of your rail ticket.

Here's the useful part: you can be dropped at the Parkway station by car and take the DART in, which avoids the terminal drop-off charge entirely. The DART entrance on Kimpton Road (LU2 0NB) is free for drop-offs. For one person with light luggage this often works out cheaper than the forecourt, and there's no clock running.

The catch is luggage. You're carrying your bags through a station and onto a shuttle. With a family and four cases, pay the drop-off charge.

Blue Badge

Blue Badge holders get a free period in Terminal Car Park 1, not in the main drop-off zone. The concession doesn't apply on the forecourt, so head for Car Park 1 instead.

A night near the airport

For an early departure, compare the cost of a nearby room with your preferred arrival plan. Check how you will get from the hotel to the terminal at the time you need to travel.

• Confirm room occupancy, check-in hours and any early breakfast options.
• Ask whether the shuttle is included, pre-booked or paid separately.
• A “hotel with parking” offer may cover only your overnight stay. A holiday parking package needs to cover your full trip.

Make time for the lounge

Check that the lounge is in the departure area you can access. Entry rules, opening hours, maximum stay and child policies vary. Allow time for security and the walk to your gate before choosing an entry time.

Use the exact pickup and destination addresses when requesting a quote. Include everyone travelling, the size of your bags and any child-seat or accessibility requirements.

• For your return journey, allow time to clear arrivals and collect bags.

Collect a car with the details checked

Airport car hire can be convenient, but the collection desk may be in the terminal, reached by shuttle or at an off-airport location. Check where to collect and return the vehicle before paying.

• Confirm driver age, licence and payment-card requirements.
• Compare the deposit, fuel, mileage and insurance terms—not only the headline price.
• Check opening hours and what happens if your flight arrives late.
