First, check your arrival point

Use your airline’s current travel information to confirm your check-in plans. Keep extra time for unloading, walking or a shuttle from your chosen parking or hotel.

There is no free drop-off at the terminal, and that's the whole story

Bristol charges for every option near the terminal. Drop & Go, Short Stay, all of it. If you want to avoid paying, you have to accept a shuttle.

The free option is the Waiting Zone, near the entrance to the Silver Zone car park. It gives you up to an hour at no charge, with a courtesy bus to the terminal. That's a generous window — long enough to wait out a delayed arrival comfortably — but your passenger takes the bus, so it doesn't suit anyone struggling with luggage or mobility.

Silver Zone is the biggest airport car park in the UK

Over 11,000 spaces, and it works differently from most park & ride.

You drive in under number plate recognition, park in the drop-off area, and leave your keys at a self-service reception — there are automated kiosks as well as a staffed counter. The team then moves your car to a secured bay. A free shuttle runs to the terminal every fifteen minutes, around the clock, taking seven to nine minutes.

The key handover is the part people don't expect. If you want to keep your keys, Silver Zone isn't for you — look at Long Stay, Multi-Storey, Mid Stay or Short Stay instead.

It's built for trips of three days or more. For anything shorter the saving doesn't cover the faff.

Two rules that produce automatic penalties

Return within thirty minutes and you get an automatic penalty charge. Cameras record your registration on the way in and out. If the same vehicle comes back inside half an hour, a notice is issued automatically. This catches people who drop off, realise something's been left behind, and come straight back.

Red routes with a strict no-stopping policy. Double red lines, no stopping to load or unload, no exceptions for a quick goodbye.

Height limits differ a lot between car parks

Bristol publishes these, and the range is wide enough to matter. Every car park has the same width and length limits, but the height varies substantially — Silver Zone takes the tallest vehicles by a long way, while the Multi-Storey and Meet & Greet are the most restrictive. If you drive a van, a camper, or anything with a roof box or bike rack, check before booking rather than at the barrier.

Card only in some car parks

Silver Zone and the Drop Off & Pick Up car park take card only. The Short Stay and Multi-Storey machines still take cash. Worth knowing if you were planning to pay with notes.

If you come back late

Overstaying your booking at Silver Zone is charged per extra day, and it's settled when you exit, not in advance. If your return flight is delayed overnight, expect to pay on the way out.

4. Whether the car park you've chosen takes cash, if that matters

A night near the airport

For an early departure, compare the cost of a nearby room with your preferred arrival plan. Check how you will get from the hotel to the terminal at the time you need to travel.

• Confirm room occupancy, check-in hours and any early breakfast options.
• Ask whether the shuttle is included, pre-booked or paid separately.
• A “hotel with parking” offer may cover only your overnight stay. A holiday parking package needs to cover your full trip.

Make time for the lounge

Check that the lounge is in the departure area you can access. Entry rules, opening hours, maximum stay and child policies vary. Allow time for security and the walk to your gate before choosing an entry time.

Arrange the ride, both ways

Use the exact pickup and destination addresses when requesting a quote. Include everyone travelling, the size of your bags and any child-seat or accessibility requirements.

• Check the meeting point, contact number and waiting-time allowance.
• Ask how flight delays, parking charges and additional stops are handled.
• For your return journey, allow time to clear arrivals and collect bags.

Collect a car with the details checked

Airport car hire can be convenient, but the collection desk may be in the terminal, reached by shuttle or at an off-airport location. Check where to collect and return the vehicle before paying.

• Confirm driver age, licence and payment-card requirements.
• Compare the deposit, fuel, mileage and insurance terms—not only the headline price.
• Check opening hours and what happens if your flight arrives late.
